What is an auction draft?
In a normal draft you take turns and grab whoever is left. In an auction draft, every team gets the same budget (say $200 of fake money) and every player is up for bid. Any team can buy any player, so long as they can outbid the room. You are never stuck with bad luck of the draw: if you want the best player in football, you can have him. You just have to pay for him.
A player is nominated
One team puts a player up for bid, usually at $1. It rotates around the room, so everyone gets to nominate.
Everyone bids
Bids climb until only one team is left. That team wins the player and the price comes out of their budget.
Budgets shrink
Spend $60 on a star and you have less for everyone else. Every team is solving the same puzzle: fill a full roster without running out of money.
The last dollar matters
You must be able to fill every roster slot, so you always have to leave at least $1 per open spot. Overspend early and the endgame gets ugly.
